Gliding Queensland Scholarship

Posted by on in Junior members

I would like to thank Gliding Queensland and the Warwick Gliding Club for the $500 Junior Gliding Scholarship. I believe that the best way to encourage Juniors to further expand their gliding experience is to offer a fantastic incentive such as this scholarship. The Warwick Gliding Club offers exceptional facilities, aircraft, training, and all-year-round soaring weather. Gliding has become a large part of my life, and I believe it is the most challenging, exciting and rewarding sport in the world. The ability to soar with eagles abreast the clouds and experience exactly what nature has on offer is second-to-none. I commenced training in April 2012 at Warwick, advanced to a single-seat Discus in August 2012 and I am now reaping the rewards, overflying the beautiful Darling Downs and experiencing the great weather that it has to offer. I was awarded a scholarship last year also and it gave me many extra flying hours free of charge - free flying?... fantastic!

I would again like to thank Gliding Queensland and the Warwick Gliding Club for this opportunity to further expand my soaring adventures by offering this scholarship.

I encourage every young aspiring aviator to go to your local club and go for a glide; you will not be disappointed!

"Gliding can not be fully appreciated until one has experienced it themselves."

Kind regards and safe flights,

Daniel Atkinson.

My First Comp - Goondiwindi 2013

Posted by on in Junior members

Goondiwindi Easter Comp 2013

I was fortunate enough before the competition to place myself in the front seat of the PW-6U with (who I believe is one of the best coaches around) Erich Wittstock. I was looking forward to this comp for months before-hand, and what a great comp it was! I was also lucky enough to accompany Graham 'Guts' Logan (appropriate nickname I reckon) on the ferry to and from Gundi behind Val in WPS. On arrival to Gundi, the wait was on for My Nan Jan to arrive... Graham and I were both surprised that she had arrived well before the 1.5 day ETA!  (Also, Thanks Nigel - for ferrying out the club parachutes).

I not only refined my flying skills with Erich that week but also learn't a lot about thermalling, planning ahead, good decision making, weather patterns - and further practiced things like feeling what the air is doing instead of studying the variometer; down to the point where I could thermal effectively without the audio-vario at all. Everything I learned will definitely improve my XC flying and I can't wait to use them in WA.

(The PW-6 turned many heads at the comp and after flying almost 17 hours in it over the week, I think the club has got a great training aircraft with good XC capabilities).

Erich is a fantastic coach and I would seriously recommend any pilot (experienced or not) to ask him about anything to do with cross-country; I'm sure he can help!

The week was full of highlights and I would love to congratulate every single person that contributed to running such a successful week. Special thanks to Nan for being myself and Graham's taxi service for the week - free of charge!

Can't wait for the WWC 2013!!!

Regards, Dan Atkinson.
